CarrerasMugica is pleased to present WORKS 2017-2018, the fourth exhibition by the artist Erlea Maneros Zabala at the gallery.
→ Erlea Maneros ZabalaThis show features four bodies of work arranged around a constructive display that connects them together.
The Voice of the Valley (2017) is a video documenting the artist’s day-to-day in her studio located in a small town in the Mojave desert in south California during the first six months of 2017. It shows a close-up of her hands at work as she listens to KNews 94.3FM radio station. Radio is an intrinsically local media whose audience is generally comprised by the population living with a certain radius. This geographical limitation means that a station’s programming is conceived for its given area of transmission. 94.3FM broadcasts a selection of nationwide content coupled with locally-produced content that reflects the conservative, libertarian narratives and sensibilities of the local context which supports the current US administration. It also broadcasts programmes such as “Coast to Coast” which is a night-time show about UFOs and paranormal activity as well as “The Jesus Christ Show”, a programme in which the presenter embodies the role of Jesus Christ and answers questions about the Bible posed by listeners who call in to the show.
Untitled (The Life of Forms) (2017-2018) are rubber cast moulds made from different sized frames that hang flaccidly from the wall, like material documents of the space embraced by the physical limits of the frame.
Temporal Arrangements. Series I (2018) is a suite of drawings based on a set of 50 images culled from various Western press media in 2018 which belong to the artist’s archive. Each drawing is made by projecting some or all of these images on a photographic print during limited periods of time. The resulting composition combines unconnected fragments of drawings made from the projection of each image.
Exercises on Abstraction Series VI (2018) comes from a series the artist has been working on since 2007. This latest work is made by exposing offset newspaper paper to strong desert sunlight for two weeks. The chemical reaction of the UV rays from the sunlight on the acids in the folded paper darkens the exposed parts.
