CarrerasMugica presents the exhibition THE CULTURE LOVERS by Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa until the 31st of January in the Studio. The exhibition consists of the simultaneous projection of two animations on opposite walls of the room: Erased and The Culture Lovers.

→ Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa

Through the videos, the artist reflects on how urban tribes manifest their independence from the system when, in reality, their aesthetics show that they are integrated into capitalist society.

In Erased, Pérez Agirregoikoa deals with the geopolitical concept of what is called culture through two scenes: the destruction of the two giant Buddhas of Bamiyan by the Taliban and the famous incident in 1953 when Rauschenberg literally erased a drawing by De Kooning and claimed that, for him, it was a poetic gesture.

Both shorts are a harsh critique of culture, which ‘is one of the most pathetic things there is’, in the artist's own words. ‘Our destiny will depend to a large extent on our geopolitical situation and the wealth and antiquity that we are lucky enough to have, for example, when Rauschenberg erases De Kooning it is a work of art and when the Taliban erase the Buddhas from the map they are savages’, explains Pérez Agirregoikoa.

The artist also distinguishes between culture and education ‘although most of the time the border between the two cannot be defined, but re-education is what gives us the keys to get out of the traps we are getting into’.
