CarrerasMugica is pleased to present a new exhibition at the gallery, DARK, LIKE AT NIGHT, the third by Itziar Okariz. The exhibition brings together four elements: a diary of dreams, an audio piece, five video projections and two images.
→ Itziar OkarizIn a series of 57 prints arranged linearly across three of the gallery's walls, Diary of dreams: 20 Noviembre 16, 10 January 17 transcribes a fragmented reading of a passage from a diary of dreams, which the artist lays out in a pattern. Each print renders the transcription of one day from the diary of dreams, with each line repeated over and over again.
In every repetition, a word is either added or removed from the line. Depending on the pattern, the words either appear or disappear with each new line, taking shape by accumulation, subtraction or repetition. The combination of successive repetitions produces a drawing, a representation that poses the problem of signs and their meanings, and the capriciousness and possibilities of meaning.
Dark, like at night is a 13-minute studio recording consisting of five days of dreams recorded in single take with different variations. The piece explores the possibilities of audio experience to produce image, space and time.
The five video projections reproduce five 2-3 minute videos taken with the camera of a mobile phone. The recordings are presented as notes that freeze everyday moments and explore the limits of action.
Two images entitled Murray Jauna complete the exhibition. They address the theme of the mask, a subject the artist used earlier in π, a performance presented in 2013 at the San Telmo Museum in Donostia-San Sebastián as part of the radio broadcast programme “Emisión 1: Una voz sin cuerpo, hacia el amor”.
