The artistic practice of Armando Andrade Tudela (Lima, Peru, 1975) explores the intersecting planes of popular culture, politics and fine art. Although he frequently employs the historical and cultural context of Latin America as his point of departure, on a deeper level, Andrade Tudela's work focuses on complex systems of translation and transference: how are aesthetic ideas politically or socially assimilated and reactivated at the local level? And, in a more general sense, how are ideas themselves embedded within the fabric of geography and physical topography? Andrade Tudela moves freely between a broad spectrum of media and materials, such as photography and video, sculpture, drawing, installation, while also regularly incorporating elements of craft and design into his work. In her comprehensive and research-driven projects, she frequently employs quasi-documentary techniques, such as recorded interviews and on-site photographic explorations, combining them with multiple references to history, politics and popular culture. At the same time, his drawings and objects combine visual directness and technical achievement with conceptual complexity.
His work has recently been exhibited at MoMA, New York, Proyecto Amil, Lima, CAP Saint-Fons, Lyon and Centro Botín, Santander, as well as in the galleries Dvir, Paris-Tel Aviv and Francesca Minini in Milan. He is currently preparing an audiovisual project for the 15th Gwangju Biennale. Since 2018 he has been a professor of volume andinstallation in the master's program at ENSBA Lyon, where he lives and works.
